Why run this at all

Every Reddit result I had was in gambling. That is a genuine methodological problem: gambling
SERPs are unusual. Affiliate spam is rampant, trust signals are weak across the board, and Google
has visible reasons to prefer a forum discussion over yet another commercial review page.

So there was a real possibility that I had not found a repeatable method at all — just a vertical
where forums win by default. The only way to know was to run the same playbook somewhere with
none of those conditions.

Mattresses made a good control. Different intent, different competitive structure, mature and
well-resourced e-commerce competitors, and no regulatory strangeness.

What I did

Same playbook, no adjustments: a genuine question in an established community (r/Bedding),
specific and personal framing — side sleeper, shoulder and hip aches, old sagging mattress,
limited budget — and no brand steer of any kind.

The result

313 ranking keywords (261 unique), positions 2–5 across queen mattress terms, 748
monthly organic traffic
at a $694 traffic value, from a post with 3 upvotes.

What it actually tells me

The method transfers. A thread with almost no engagement still reached positions 2–5 on
commercial mattress terms. That rules out the "gambling is just an easy SERP" explanation — the
mechanism is the format and the community authority, not the vertical.

It transfers with lower ceilings. 748 traffic against 4,847 for blackjack, and the Ahrefs
comparison shows keywords down 135 over the window. In a vertical with strong, well-funded
commercial competitors, the forum result gets pushed back down over time in a way it did not in
gambling.

Which is the useful conclusion for anyone deciding where to spend: Reddit works broadly, but the
size of the win still depends on how weak the commercial competition is. That is worth knowing
before you build a channel strategy on it.

The thread. Note the engagement: 3 upvotes and 28 comments — a fraction of the gambling threads. This was never going to rank on popularity.Reddit · r/Bedding · 3 upvotes · 28 comments

748 monthly organic traffic at a $694 traffic value — and, honestly, a decline: keywords are down 135 from the comparison window. The method works here, but it does not hold as hard as it did in gambling.Ahrefs · top pages

What this proved

  1. The same playbook, run in an unrelated vertical with strong e-commerce competitors, reached positions 2 to 5 on queen mattress terms from a post with 3 upvotes.
  2. That rules out "gambling is an easy SERP" as the explanation: the mechanism is the format and the community's authority.
  3. The ceiling is lower where commercial competition is well funded: 748 monthly traffic against 4,847 for blackjack, and keywords declined over the window.
